Actor Matthew Lillard played iconic Scream villain Stu Macher alongside Skeet Ulrich’s Billy Loomis in the original 1996 classic. In the years since, however, fans have been eagerly theorizing the possibility that Stu survived. Now Matthew Lillard has opened up about the possibility of whether or not he could return for Scream 7.
The seventh film in the Scream franchise has been facing several developmental issues. The film lost its leads, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, and director Christopher Landon also walked from the project. Nevertheless, some fans hope this means that actor Matthew Lillard could still be brought back to make an appearance.
Now, according to an interview via FearHQ.com, he discussed the possibility of a return for Scream 7. Here’s what Lillard shared:
“I don’t know,” he shared. “Listen, this town in this day and age, and at my age, I’ve had a great career. I’ve come around second base and I’m heading for home. That’s a baseball analogy. We’re in stoppage time is a good football analogy in the UK. It’s something that I’m super proud of. I’m glad it’s in my life and my repertoire. I’m glad it’s part of my history and lineage.”
Though Lillard does seem more optimistic about moving onto other franchises, specifically Five Nights at Freddy’s where he played William Afton aka Springtrap.
“It would have to make a lot of sense to go back as a story and as filmmakers. I’m really thrilled to be involved with Five Nights at Freddy’s which has been a huge success and been a third franchise in my career, which I didn’t expect. I’m more excited about the upside and future of that than going back to doing something I’ve done before.”
“All that said, we’ll see what happens,” Lillard teased.
And, while he’s open to seeing what happens, he does note that he hasn’t yet had a call for Scream 7. But he does agree that the character could survive.
“Nobody has called me [Laughs]. I’ll tell you that much. No one seems that interested in the return of Stu except for the fans. The fans are freaking out and love the idea, and I would argue that if you throw a TV on my head, I’ll survive. So, there you go!”
As such, we’ll have to see what the future brings. There seems to be some potential to bring Matthew Lillard back as Stu Macher. For now, however, it looks like Matthew Lillard is not attached to appear in Scream 7.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Scream 7 as we have them. It’ll definitely be interesting to see if Matthew Lillard could ever have an opportunity to return to the franchise, but if not, he certainly left behind a fantastic performance in the original film alone.
