The Friday the 13th franchise is gradually being brought back to life. It’s been more than a decade and a half since the last installment hit theaters, and fans are ready for Jason Voorhees to return. Additionally, it looks like Hollywood executives are too, as Jason Blum announced he wants to reboot Friday the 13th with filmmaker James Wan involved.
Jason Blum’s Blumhouse recently took over for the most recent three Halloween installments. Other franchises like The Exorcist have also been handled by the studio. And, considering their own successful properties like The Purge, it’s no surprise that Blum would want a piece of Friday the 13th as well.
As for James Wan, his credits include Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring, so he would certainly make a great pick for just about any horror property. In fact, his underrated 1980s horror throwback Malignant is a perfect example that he could seriously rock a new Friday the 13th.
Of course, it could only happen if Jason Blum actually did acquire the rights to Friday the 13th. He did say “Friday the 13th is what I would do,” while speaking with Collider about which project he’d love to do. But it’s not that easy.
“It’s not a Blumhouse project, but I’m trying to will it into being one. It’s just a piece of IP I’ve always loved.”
He then brought up James Wan’s potential involvement if it were to happen:
“And James Wan and Atomic Monster are very passionate about it, and I think we would have them shepherd it for us. That would be a lot of fun.”
Of course, the rights issues are still in the midst of being settled. For the most part, however, things seem to be working out for the Friday the 13th franchise. We’re set to get a brand-new live-action series titled Crystal Lake from A24 and Peacock, so stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more updates as we have them. And hopefully at some point we’ll get to see a new Friday the 13th movie too.
