As shown by the documentary quickly rising to the top spot on Max – with it being the number one documentary streaming on the platform – and number 2 on the top 10 overall – viewers clearly don’t have a problem being a bit “uncomfortable”. It certainly seems to have the ability to capture the attention of viewers and provoke thoughts.

“They called him mostly harmless “Some feedback is that it’s crazy how nobody can bother checking up on u, even ur own family. Sounds like he had a fucked up life and not figuring out cause of death and looking like it was malnutrition is intense.

Watched THEY CALLED HIM MOSTLY HARMLESS
This true crime doc is about identity and the stories and narratives that we create for ourselves around ourselves & others.
It’s also a look at feeling the need to be seen, heard, & know our story is important.

It’s clear that many viewers have found They Called Him Mostly Harmless a disturbing watch for various reasons. Others were outright frustrated, however, and understandably so given the resources implemented to locate this person.
Especially when considering that so many others, especially minorities, often do not receive the same attention or effort. This is made worse by the fact that the man was ultimately discovered to have been an abuser.
The premise for the documentary is written as follows:
“When an unidentified hiker is found deceased in the Florida wilderness, authorities release a sketch. Multiple hikers call in claiming to have met the man. There’s only one problem – he never told them his name. It would take two years, thousands of devoted internet sleuths, and a miracle of science to identify him, and that’s when the trouble really starts. A character-centric reimagining of a classic true crime genre, They Called Him Mostly Harmless is about finding yourself when you’re looking for someone else.”
It’s certainly an interesting watch, albeit disturbing or frustrating, but those are certainly elements needed for a solid true crime documentary. Patricia E. Gillespie directed They Called Him Mostly Harmless which features Kristin Adams, Marge Creech, and Brandon Dowell.
