Disney has been gradually returning to some of their most popular films and television shows in recent years. Now it’s been revealed that the studio is finally making one long-awaited sequel to a classic Disney movie more than 20 years later.
In the tradition of films like Hocus Pocus, fans have been discussing for years whether or not this particular movie would be revisited with a brand-new sequel. Of course, it might not be too surprising in this day and age, but it was certainly a project like many others that fans were uncertain would ever get off the ground.
Now, as shared in a new interview, it looks like this sequel is finally happening. Though the original film’s star notes that the new movie is merely “in the process” at this time. Here’s what she shared about the highly-anticipated Disney movie sequel:
Lindsay Lohan, star of Freaky Friday, noted that the sequel would see her reunited with co-star Jamie Lee Curtis. When speaking with PEOPLE, said she was “just excited to work with Jamie again and see how much further we can take it.”
“Because we talk almost every other day in general, so I think we’re going to have a lot of fun with this,” Lohan continues.
The outlet notes that Lohan also mentioned the project on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, where she added that she and Jamie Lee Curtis were “both excited” to do the sequel.
Hopefully there’ll be more information in the near future, then, especially if they’re currently working on a new sequel. There’s certainly a lot of demand from fans for a continuation, so if they play their cards right, it could be a great way to appeal to fans both old and new.
The 2003 film Freaky Friday was itself based on the 1972 novel of the same name by Mary Rodgers, and it was actually the third adaptation of the story by that time. It was directed by Mark Waters with a screenplay penned by Heather Hach and Leslie Dixon.
