Unlike other hit DreamWorks properties including Shrek and Kung Fu Panda, the 2010 film Megamind never received a sequel – until now. Peacock surprised fans with the announcement that a Megamind sequel and television series were both on the way. Unfortunately, they aren’t living up to fans’ expectations.
In fact, the release of the Megamind sequel seems to have united the internet in their hatred for the film. The movie, which features none of the voice cast from the original hit film, is receiving negative reviews across the web. It seems as though no one approves of the film, whether you’re looking at Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, X, or YouTube.
The new film, titled Megamind vs. The Doom Syndicate, seems to have been created solely to launch the television series Megamind Rules! on Peacock. While Will Ferrell voiced the titular character in the original film, he’s been replaced by Keith Ferguson for this new iteration. Laura Post replaces Tina Fey as Roxanne Ritchi, and Josh Brener replaces David Cross as Minion – now named Ol’ Chum.
As of this writing, the film has a mere 11% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a similarly low 2.1/10 on IMDb. As you can see below, users on X have not been kind either. Here are some of their responses to the newly-released film and the decision to not have any cast members reprise their roles:

Why did dreamworks put more effort into Puss in boots 2 and not Megamind 2 pic.twitter.com/sZt2IM6JMc

Me going back to 2022 to convince DreamWorks to not do a Megamind sequel: https://t.co/OKUhT1GL82 pic.twitter.com/SmBJ4P0jNF

This thing isn’t canon, just a way to pander to Megamind fans without the effort, if Dreamworks can make a Boss Baby 1 & 2, they can make a full budget Megamind 2 pic.twitter.com/hRFbaWQZiz

Unfortunately, fans desperately wanted a proper sequel to Megamind. Instead, they received Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate, a sequel that only acts as a pilot for a television series. It’s certainly disappointing when DreamWorks has proved capable of making such great, proper sequels in the past. Especially to those properties mentioned above including Shrek and Kung Fu Panda.
It’s unknown what will happen to the Megamind brand going forward. As they did before, however, it looks like most fans will have to settle for the original film on its own. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional news as we have it.
