The Marvel Cinematic Universe is mostly known for its major successes over the years. Of course, more recently, there have been more than a few failures with their film and television productions. Now the biggest MCU flop is surprisingly making a comeback on Disney Plus.
It’s this particular comeback that seems to suggest even a failed MCU flop can have some success for the brand. Now that the film is available to stream on Disney Plus, it appears to have reached a new audience on the streaming platform.
The film initially failed to make a profit in theaters. Of course, one potential reason for its failure is that the film happened to be closely tied to a live-action Disney Plus series set in the MCU. Perhaps it’s this same audience that is helping the film find success on the streaming platform as opposed to success in theaters.
For those unaware, the film is The Marvels, the follow-up to Captain Marvel and the aforementioned Disney Plus series known as Ms. Marvel. The movie recently climbed all the way to the top spot. The sequel featured Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson and Ms. Marvel’s Iman Vellani as they teamed up with Teyonah Parris’s Monica Rambeau.
In addition to Larson, Vellani, and Parris, the film starred Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-jun, Tessa Thompson, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Lewis, Shamier Anderson, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur.
Nia DaCosta known for having directed the recent revival of Candyman, directed the film. It’s certainly unfortunate to see that it flopped, especially with so much potential in her career. But hopefully its success on streaming can sway things into a new direction.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Marvel Cinematic Universe updates as we have them. For now, it looks like fans can check out The Marvels on Disney Plus for themselves. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of comeback this film will make in the years to come following its failure in theaters.
