Director Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy came to a close with Spider-Man 3 in 2007. Plans for an additional sequel fell through after a reboot was greenlit instead. With the recent appearance of Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man: No Way Home, however, it looks like Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 could finally be back on the table.
The path for the Spider-Man film franchise has become increasingly complex over the years. Sony seems to be okay with greenlighting any number of shared universes and reboots, and to that extent, it’s made it even more likely for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man universe to co-exist with any other ongoing iterations. Now that could very well be the case.
As shared in a recent interview, one star involved with the Spider-Man film franchise has teased that Sony may be working with Sam Raimi on finally creating the fourth installment of his story. This would no doubt delight fans that have been waiting for Tobey Maguire to get back under the mask (even with his great appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home.)
Here’s what Thomas Haden Church, who’s played Sandman in both Spider-Man 3 and Spider-Man: No Way Home, had to share about the possibility with ComicBook.com:
“But Sandman, there’s been some rumors that they might ask me to do another Spider-Man, and I’d do it tomorrow,” Church first shared. Though he hasn’t heard anything about being wanted for Avengers: Secret Wars, he did tease the existence of Spider-Man 4 which is no doubt even more surprising.
“But, you know, I think Sam is gonna do another Spider-Man with Tobey [Maguire], and that’s the one that … They had an option for me to do Spiderman 4 when there was going to be a Spiderman 4. They had an option on me to come back. So if it happens, that would be fantastic. I’m getting a little old.”
In addition to Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sam Raimi himself returned to the world of Marvel by directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. At this point, it certainly seems as though the stage could already be set for Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire to give us Spider-Man 4. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Marvel and the progress regarding Spider-Man 4 as we have them. For now, the prospect of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 finally happening is a genuinely exciting one, especially for longtime fans of the franchise.
