Both Pixar and Disney are often associated with family-friendly fare. Of course, oftentimes these titles tend to induce some form of controversy. Now one such controversial Disney and Pixar animated movie has found itself climbing the Disney Plus streaming charts.
Disney Plus has been an interesting venture for both studios. It’s allowed them to distribute content either exclusively for the service or as a way to bring theatrical and straight-to-video releases to consumers. The aforementioned controversial film happens to have been a 2022 theatrical release.
As mentioned, this film is one of their family-friendly ventures. But that hasn’t stopped some viewers from forming criticisms regarding the subject matter contained in the movie. As it turns out, some viewers feel that this Pixar production is just a little too mature for everyone to watch.
The film, Turning Red, revolves around a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian girl named Mei. As the film progresses, it turns out that Mei has the tendency to turn into a giant red panda any time she feels a strong emotion. It’s an obvious analogy for puberty. And, while many older kids are no doubt fine with the subject matter, some viewers feel like it might be too much for younger children.
Nevertheless, many animated films have some kind of strong subject matter to cover. Quite a few have plots that revolve around life and death, and it doesn’t quite get more mature than that. As such, it’s no surprise to see that the controversial Turning Red has already reached the number 5 spot from the Top 10 films on Disney Plus.
Additionally, given that the film was released in 2022, it’s quite a surprise to see it suddenly revisited by so many Disney Plus subscribers. Despite its controversies, then, it’s clearly a film with mass appeal and it’ll be nice to see it resonate with future viewers.
