Lionsgate has been hard at work with a number of new projects based around their fan-favorite IPs. One of these remake projects appears to be a new iteration of American Psycho.
The first American Psycho film, released in 2000, was based on the 1991 novel of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis. The violent dark comedy introduced serial killer Patrick Bateman to the horror genre, giving readers and viewers a satirical take that made fun of yuppie subculture and materialism.
As shared via insider Jeff Sneider, however, this new take seems to be directed towards a new generation. Specifically one that could take place in modern-day. This would certainly be a major change to the original story which rather notably took place in the 1980s.
At this moment, however, it’s difficult to determine any plot details beyond that. There doesn’t seem to be any actual writers attached, so plans could change. Though we may hear more details soon if Lionsgate agrees with any upcoming pitches.
Christian Bale played Patrick Bateman in 2000’s American Psycho which was directed by Mary Harron. Harron co-wrote the film’s screenplay with Guinevere Turner. It quickly received positive reactions from audiences and critics, in addition to becoming a success at the box office.
It was followed by a direct-to-video sequel with very little connections in 2002 titled American Psycho 2. Patrick Bateman creator Bret Easton Ellis has since discredited this work as being true to his American Psycho narrative.
Ellis himself included the character in several other works, including The Rules of Attraction which nearly incorporated a new version of Patrick Bateman played by Casper Van Dien. The film itself centers around Patrick’s brother, Sean Bateman.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding this alleged new remake of American Psycho as we have them. It’ll certainly be interesting to see where the property goes from here.
