Fans of one particularly successful HBO series will be happy to know that it’s been greenlit for another season. This is exciting news, especially in an era when shows are often either canceled altogether or put on hiatus.
The new season of the show will also carry over the showrunner from its most recent iteration. As this particular iteration has been the most successful season of the series to date, this should undoubtedly have fans hyped.
It’s certainly a good time to be a fan, as things are gearing up for what could be another blockbuster season. The decision also reflects HBO’s confidence in the series’ ability to engage and entertain their audience.
The news was confirmed in a new report from Variety, who says “the season is the most-watched installment of the show to date, with 12.7 million cross platform viewers. The season finale on Feb. 18 was the most-watched episode of the season, drawing 3.2 million viewers across HBO and Max. That represents a 57% increase over the show’s premiere viewership in January.”
Variety confirms that:
“‘True Detective‘ has been renewed for Season 5 at HBO. Issa López, the creator of ‘True Detective: Night Country,’ will helm the fifth season under her new overall deal with HBO.”
López shared the following statement regarding the renewal and her return to True Detective:
“From conception to release, ‘Night Country’ has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” López said. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of ‘True Detective’ with Casey, Francesca and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”
An additional statement was shared by Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programing and head of HBO drama series and films:
“Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit,” added Orsi. “She helmed ‘True Detective: Night Country’ from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie and Kali’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”
The HBO series has so far changed actors with new seasons. This means Night Country leads Jodie Foster and Kali Reis aren’t attached to the next season. Hopefully we’ll have more details on the next iteration soon.

For now, it’s great to see that Issa López will have another opportunity to explore the True Detective sandbox and offer another thrilling story following the success of Night Country.
