The iconic Harry Potter novels were famously adapted into a series of live-action films from 2001 to 2011. Now the story will be told again, as it’s been revealed that the Harry Potter TV series is officially moving forward.
As shared via THR, the new series will be released on the Max streaming service. Fans can expect it to be released as soon as 2026. This was all confirmed by Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
Here’s what Zaslav had to share while speaking for the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call:
“We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter,” he began. “The last film was made more than a dozen years ago.”
Additionally, Zaslav reveals that he spoke with Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling about the production of the new series:
“I was in London a few weeks ago with Casey [Bloys, HBO and Max chief] and Channing [Dungey, WBD TV chief] and we spent some real time with J.K. and her team,” he said. “Both sides are thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead. We can’t wait to share a decade of new stories with fans around the world on Max.”
The series is said to have been in development for several years now. Upon being released in 2026, the goal for the Harry Potter series is that it will retell the story of all seven original books across the following ten years.
Many fans have been hoping for something in that vein, as the original films had to reduce many story and plot elements to fit theatrical runtimes. For a television series, however, it’ll be interesting to see just how much lore they’ll be able to expand upon.
