There was a time when so many horror movies released during the 1970s and 1980s seemed to become instant favorites. Now one such fan-favorite horror film, released only a few years ago, is following in their footsteps. In fact, this newer horror movie has just reached the Netflix Top 10.
The film was only released a few years ago in 2022. In the time since then, however, it’s quickly become a hit with audiences. In fact, it’s already spawned a franchise of its own. Quite admirable considering the film is an homage to horror classics like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre which likewise remain major hits even today.
By the time of this writing, this particular entry has already reached the number 10 spot on the streaming service. This also makes it the number 1 horror movie on the streaming service. Of course, there’s one possible reason for this.
The film has only grown in popularity because, as mentioned, it’s spawned a franchise of its own. The film, titled X, was directed by Ti West. He crafted the project to capture the same style as 1970s grindhouse hits, and due to its success, it wasn’t long after that a prequel titled Pearl was released.
Interestingly, Pearl takes place decades prior. While X is set in 1979, Pearl takes place in 1918. This is a drastic change in setting but it explains the antagonists of X quite perfectly. Fans are still hyped up by the films, however, as they know a third entry – titled MaXXXine – is set to directly follow the events of X. It will also shift to a new time period, the 1980s, which will allow even more classic inspirations to take hold.
The film also features two major stars. Mia Goth plays both the protagonist and antagonist of the film, while Jenna Ortega plays a supporting character. The two stars have only continued to grow in popularity since the film’s release, with Goth continuing to star in both continuations and Ortega joining the Scream franchise and upcoming Beetlejuice sequel.
As such, it makes perfect sense that fans are eager to check out the modern horror fan-favorite X on Netflix. It’s likely we’ll continue seeing this level of popularity through the release of MaXXXine, so stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them.
