The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had an interesting time with creating a number of solo projects, team-ups, and epic crossover events. Of course, given the latter two categories, there are many characters that have yet to receive solo projects. Now one such long-awaited Marvel MCU movie is likely never happening.
The potential film is certainly an interesting oddity for the franchise. Especially because the character has already appeared numerous times throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately, due to rights issues, it’s unknown if they’ll ever have their own solo opportunity.
Now, as shared in a new interview, the star for this character has even confirmed that their opportunity for a solo Marvel MCU movie is likely not happening.
Mark Ruffalo took over for The Incredible Hulk actor Edward Norton in the MCU. As such, while the character did technically receive a solo movie, it’s not with the actor that most fans associate with the franchise. Not to mention, The Hulk is one of the few original Avengers to not have a series of sequels in addition to their own solo film. So it would make sense to bring Mark Ruffalo back for a new Hulk movie or two.
The reason he hasn’t is due to rights issues. The character is technically owned by Universal, but the studio is cooperating with Disney to allow his usage throughout their shared universe. While there are rumors that they could someday come to a deal, Ruffalo confirms that Kevin Feige once told him he would never get a solo movie.
As such, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk is often used as a supporting character for other films, including the likes of The Avengers, the various Avengers sequels, and Thor: Ragnarok. He also made an appearance in the Disney Plus series She-Hulk. As revealed during SBIFF, however, Ruffalo recalls that Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige told him there will never be another solo Hulk movie.
Here’s what he shared:
“‘We’ll never give you a stand-alone Hulk,'” he recalls Kevin Feige telling him. As such, he was given character arcs across multiple different films instead. “I don’t mean to burst anyone’s bubble.”
Though when asked if that was still the case, Ruffalo had the following response:
“I could talk more about it but I have been told not to,” Ruffalo shares regarding the possibility of a new stand-alone Hulk movie. As such, while nothing is confirmed, it seems as though it could be possible.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Hulk updates as we have them. Hopefully there will be good things for Hulk fans in the future. As for now, it looks like fans can still look forward to Mark Ruffalo appearing elsewhere in the MCU.
