The Spider-Man franchise has been branching off into a number of interesting projects. Many of these projects have revolved around the character’s more iconic villains, including Venom and Morbius, though Sony took a different direction for Madame Web. Now Madame Web is facing backlash over a major change within the Spider-Man franchise.
As one can imagine, the Spider-Man franchise has prompted numerous different iterations and imaginings over the years. Many details, as a result, have been altered over the years. One very important detail, however, was changed for Madame Web – and fans aren’t happy.
Of course, fans have already been expressing their disapproval for Madame Web. This time, however, it was an interview with director S.J. Clarkson which sparked the backlash on social media. As shared in an interview with Total Film, she explained the Madame Web change.
As it turns out, the iconic line, “With great power comes great responsibility,” has been altered. The line is often associated with Uncle Ben’s advice given to Peter Parker. It’s this advice that helps shape him into Spider-Man. For the new storyline, however, the line has been revised as follows:
“When you take on the responsibility, great power will come.”
Now fans have shared the following responses to emphasize their disapproval for the new line:
Madame Web changed it to “”When you take on the responsibility, great power will come”
This is horrific. With great power comes great responsibility means you got power, now have a duty to use it properly.
Her line is about how to GAIN power. It’s the POWER that you want. pic.twitter.com/XIDDaXoP9g

It’s like a poor translation or something 😭 why can’t they use the original line 💀

Of course, this film isn’t exactly a direct adaptation of the iconic Spider-Man story. As such, it’s not shocking to see that they’d perhaps want to change the line to better suit their new story, albeit in a way that the classic tale is still honored. Though clearly many fans do not feel that way.
Madame Web is currently available to see in theaters. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the Spider-Man brand as we have them. For now, we’ll have to see how Madame Web continues to perform with audiences.
