One of the most successful franchise revivals of the past decade has been the Godzilla and King Kong shared universe, aka the MonsterVerse. The film and television multimedia franchise contains several films featuring the iconic monsters, and they’re set to appear again in a new movie. Fans can get a taste of their return with the new trailer released for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
As the title suggests, the film takes place after the events of the hugely successful Godzilla vs Kong. Of course, unlike that film which pitted the two monsters against one another for most of the runtime, it looks like this sequel will be changing things up.
As with the finale for that 2021 blockbuster, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will force the two characters to work as a team in an effort to take down a bigger foe. It’s a premise that’s worked especially well for the Godzilla film franchise over the decades, especially as the MonsterVerse continues to mirror the Showa era of the franchise.
Fans will recognize the Showa era for its frequent team-ups and usage of Godzilla as a hero of sorts in most incarnations as opposed to his more antagonistic appearances. Now, as the trailer below suggests, Godzilla is doing something similar for this new iteration alongside Kong. Here’s the new official trailer for the highly-anticipated sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire:
Adam Wingard directed the film which was written by Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater based on a story by Rossio, Wingard, and Barrett.
The cast of the film includes Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Kaylee Hottle, Fala Chen, Alex Ferns, and Rachel House.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be available for fans to see in theaters on April 12, 2024. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the upcoming MonsterVerse sequel and any other related projects as we have them. It’s certainly a good time to be a Kaiju fan.
