The Planet of the Apes film franchise is set to return with the all-new sequel, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Now, excitingly enough, a new trailer for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has been released to coincide with the Super Bowl.
The Planet of the Apes film franchise has existed since 1968. In that time, fans were treated to a series of five original films, a live-action television series, and an animated television series. Tim Burton‘s Planet of the Apes tried to unsuccessfully revive the brand in 2001, and a decade later, Rise of the Planet of the Apes succeeded where that movie failed.
Rise was successful because it created an origin story for a new “Planet of the Apes,” one that eventually forms due to an uprising led by a super-intelligent chimpanzee named Caesar. His story was further told in 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and came to an end in 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes.
Now Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will push the latest timeline even further into the future with a new cast of characters to follow. Of course, this all takes place in the world that Caesar helped create. But fans know that history is often manipulated by antagonistic apes in this franchise, and that certainly seems to be the case as shown in the new footage.
Here’s the new official trailer for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes:
It definitely looks like an exciting blend of old and new, with elements to appreciate for fans of any iteration of the franchise. Let’s hope this keeps up the positive streak from the most recent three films and delivers an exciting new addition to the Planet of the Apes brand.
Wes Ball directed the new film and in addition to Owen Teague, the cast includes Kevin Durand, Freya Allen, William H. Macy, and Peter Macon. The film is set to hit theaters on May 24, 2024.
