The Saw film franchise made a major comeback last year in 2023. Now, for 2024, it’s clear that Saw is back as an annual tradition. The next highly-anticipated film in the series, Saw XI, has been announced and we now know who will be the director.
It’s been a difficult time for the series over the last few years. Saw: The Final Chapter, released in 2010, remained the last film in the series until 2017’s Jigsaw. This film didn’t perform well with fans or critics, and as a result, the series was retooled with Spiral: From the Book of Saw in 2021.
Of course, that film didn’t perform well with most fans or critics either, which led to Saw X. This particular film went back to the franchise’s roots with a return from Tobin Bell as John Kramer. It told a personal story of his from between the events of Saw and Saw II. Fortunately, the film became the most well-received entry yet, and seems to have rejuvenated the brand.
Now, as shared via Bloody-Disgusting, a familiar face will be returning to direct the sequel. Kevin Greutert, director of Saw VI, Saw: The Final Chapter, and last year’s Saw X will helm Saw XI. Additionally, fans will be familiar with Greutert for having edited the first five Saw films in addition to Jigsaw.
He quite perfectly captured the atmosphere of the original few films for the franchise’s tenth installment, and it’s expected that he’ll do so again as the director of Saw XI. Interestingly, Saw X writers Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger aren’t involved with this new installment, so we’ll have to see who else joins the project.
Saw XI is set to hit theaters later this year on September 27, 2024. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Saw XI updates as we have them. It’s certainly a good time to be a Saw fan.
