It appears that Disney is in the midst of some major course correction. The studio has acknowledged their reliance on content for Disney Plus, and as a result, the lack of quality in certain projects. Now in addition to changes at Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm for the future, we can expect to see the same for other sides of the company including a surprise Disney sequel.
We’re already seeing some major changes happen at Disney as they begin reassessing their projects. For example, the highly-anticipated Disney Plus series Daredevil: Born Again was involved with a creative overhaul that led to Netflix’s selection of Marvel shows to finally be considered part of MCU canon proper.
Now they seem to be correcting the animated side of things as well. This seems to include spending time on creating new Disney sequels, one of which happens to be the surprise sequel Moana 2. As shared via THR, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed the existence of Moana 2 during an earnings call.
Specifically, he claims to “feel great” about where the studio is currently at, and Moana 2 is an example of this. He shared the following about the film’s development, which began as a television series until they decided it deserved a theatrical release:
“We were impressed by what we saw, and knew it deserved a theatrical release,” he shared, adding that the original Moana also had great success via streaming with more than 1 billion minutes viewed on Disney Plus in 2023.
The new Moana sequel is set to be directed by Dave Derrick Jr.
Fans can expect to see Moana 2 hit theaters on November 27, 2024. Hopefully we’ll have additional glimpses at the project in the near future.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Disney news and other updates regarding Moana 2 as we have them. Hopefully Moana fans are pleased to know that a sequel to the animated hit is on the way.
