It seems like anything has the possibility of generating a sequel these days. This more recently includes sequels to films released in the 1990’s such as Hocus Pocus 2 and Good Burger 2. Now, it seems as though one other such beloved 90’s movie is finally getting a sequel. It definitely goes to show that anything is possible in the realm of Hollywood.
The film was first released in 1997. Now, more than 25 years later, one of the movie’s stars confirmed that the sequel is in the works. The original writer is currently working on a continuation. The sequel was first teased as a possibility back in 2022 and in the year’s since then, it looks like some major progress has been made.
Here’s what Mira Sorvino had to say about the project which would be a sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion:
“Robin Schiff, the writer, is working on it,” Sorvino revealed to US Magazine. “She’s currently working on Emily in Paris, so she’s finishing up her draft to present to the studio.”
Additionally, Sorvino confirms that she would return with co-star Lisa Kudrow for the project:
“Lisa and I are wrapping up our deals as executive producers on it with the studio,” Sorvino explained. “We’re full force ahead.”
Hopefully we’ll have more details on the development soon and whether or not the sequel will be happening in the near future.
The original film, first released in 1997, was directed by David Mirkin from a screenplay penned by Schiff. The story itself was based on the 1988 stage play Ladies Room. In addition to Sorvino and Kudrow, the cast of the film included Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Julia Campbell, Vincent Ventresca, Elaine Hendrix, Justin Theroux, and Camryn Manheim.
