Streaming has allowed internet users the opportunity to rediscover plenty of underappreciated titles. The ability to simply choose whatever film or television show might be available according to your internet connection has definitely changed the way we consume media. Now, on that subject of the future, it looks like an underrated sci-fi movie is now streaming on Max.
Max, formerly known as HBO Max, is owned by Warner Bros Discovery. The streaming platform has quickly grown into a major competitor for the likes of Netflix, and on that note, it looks like subscribers are in for a treat with this particular title.
The movie, released in 2018, was directed by Leigh Whannell who’s well-known for collaborating with fellow director James Wan. In fact, Whannell co-wrote the hit horror film Saw which he also co-starred in. As for this movie, however, Logan Marshall-Green stars in a role that’s sure to keep viewers at the edge of their seats.
Upgrade, a movie produced by Blumhouse Productions, features Marshall-Green as auto mechanic Grey Trace. The setting takes place in 2046 in a much more technologically-advanced future. This leads Trace to an interesting medical solution after he suffers major injuries when his self-driving car crashes. At the same time, a group of four men kill his wife Asha.
As for the medical solution, Grey decides to take an experimental implant with a device called STEM. This device allows him the ability to walk again after the crash left him confined to a wheelchair. On the other hand, however, STEM begins to take over his body as the AI agrees to help him seek revenge on the four men that killed his wife.
The plot continues in an interesting direction, with one particularly shocking twist ending. It’s worth the watch on Max, and after all these years, the film has still managed to build a solid cult following. Many fans hope that a proper continuation from Blumhouse will materialize in one form or another. A TV series was announced back in 2020 but there haven’t been many updates since then. Until something happens, however, at least we can revisit the original.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Max updates as we have them. For now, those interested can now check out the underrated movie Upgrade on the Max streaming platform.
