Quentin Tarantino has directed various iconic films throughout his career as a writer and director. Unfortunately, he’s preparing to retire from directing with his upcoming feature The Movie Critic. On the bright side, it looks like Quentin Tarantino is reuniting with frequent collaborator Brad Pitt for the flick.
Quentin Tarantino and Brad Pitt first worked together for the 2009 war film Inglorious Basterds. The film depicted an alternate version of World War II, and in that same spirit, they collaborated again for 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. This particular film featured a similar alternate timeline, albeit focused on the events of the Manson Family and 1970s Hollywood.
Now, as shared via Deadline, The Movie Critic will be their next opportunity to work together. If it is Tarantino’s last film, however, then it should be noted that this could also be the final time. It’s also unknown what role Pitt might have in the feature.
Here’s what the publication shared regarding Pitt’s involvement:
“Unclear if Pitt will play the title character, but I think he is.”
The actual story of the film is said to be “based on a guy who really lived but was never really famous, and he used to write movie reviews for a porno rag.”
It’s unclear who exactly this critic is and just how closely the film will be adapting his life. However, it’s clearly an important story for Quentin Tarantino, as he’s said to have read these reviews from those very magazines as a teenager.
Interestingly, the publication also theorizes that The Movie Critic could even be a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Tarantino has plenty of additional Hollywood info in his novelization, which reveals that Brad Pitt‘s Cliff Booth was a major cinema fan. This, the publication adds, could mean that “Booth went from stuntman to film critic.”
Of course, it’s quite early for that kind of speculation. Ultimately, we’ll just have to wait and see what Tarantino and Pitt have in store. The Movie Critic is currently scheduled for a theatrical release in 2025. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the highly-anticipated project as we have them.
