The 1990s ushered in plenty of massive hits and modern-day cult favorites. Now one such cult classic is set to receive an R-rated remake.
Interestingly, this particular title was somewhat family-friendly in its first iteration, only receiving a PG-13 rating at the time. Now, an official MPAA listing has shared not only the film’s title – but the stronger rating as well.
The new rating reveals that the remake has been rated “R” for “teen drug use, language and some sexual references.” Interestingly, the project was first announced in 2020, at which time a report revealed some surprise details that one might not expect when thinking about the original movie.
Deadline revealed that 1991’s black comedy Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead was set to be remade by director Bille Woodruff and screenwriter Chuck Hayward. The “new interpretation” was described as being “as funny and outrageous as the original but also smart and connected to the world today.”
Other than that, it was revealed that the cult classic remake would revolve around a Black family. The details since then have been virtually nonexistent. Though it looks like it managed to get through production at some point and we should be seeing the project finally released sooner than we think.
It’s worth mentioning that the previous iteration, with Woodruff and Hayward attached, could even be completely different than this new project. After all, we haven’t had any official announcements to know if they stayed attached as director and writer or if new talent was tapped instead. Likewise, we don’t yet have any casting details.
The original film revolves around a 17-year old girl who must now watch over her family after the babysitter their mother hired dies. It’s a dark concept but one that was brought to life with wonderful shades of dark comedy from Critters director Stephen Herek and writers Neil Landau & Tara Ison.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead and other such revivals as we have them. It’ll definitely be interesting to see what they’ve cooked up for this new iteration, especially with the stronger rating.
