The Marvel Cinematic Universe kicked off with Iron Man in 2008. The actual first canon event for the MCU, however, goes back way further in time.
The franchise has successfully expanded over the years, bringing in new films, shows, and other projects to tell a more complete story. Additional films like Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain Marvel further fleshed out the timeline that took place prior to Iron Man.
Now, however, Marvel Studios has confirmed the first canon event that took place in the MCU. It’s an exciting part of the newly-released book Marvel Studios’ The Marvel Cinematic Universe – An Official Timeline which goes into great detail regarding the fictional universe’s origins.
This is confirmed in the entry titled “The Handiwork of Celestials.” The Celestials were first teased in Guardians of the Galaxy, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Eternals having further explained their presence in the franchise.
This section continues to dive into the MCU’s chronological timeline. As the universe begins with “The Big Bang,” it then leads into the creation of the Infinity Stones and then the formation of Earth, Asgard, and even the tree Yggdrasil.
It’s certainly interesting to see such an extravagant mythology broken down into a chronological timeline. Especially after fans have waited so many years to get to this point. We’ve certainly come a long way since the release of Iron Man which kicked off this franchise in the first place.
Now that the book has been released, however, it’s clear that the creation of the Infinity Stones was perhaps the biggest moment for the MCU and its first canon event. Quite fitting, then, considering the Infinity Saga makes up the first chapter of this beloved shared universe.
