Many horror films have made it into Max’s Top 10. The streaming platform offers a wide variety of titles, and even the obscure hits tend to have some kind of cult following. Now, however, a really forgotten horror movie is dominating the Max charts.
Released in 2007, the movie has actually hit the number 3 spot on Max as of this writing. It’s quite a surprise to see considering that the film isn’t really talked about these days. In fact, during its theatrical run, the film only earned $62.8 million on a $40 million budget.
Nevertheless, it seems to have found a new life on streaming in 2024. It’s always great when a film can find an audience, even nearly two decades later. And it seems that’s exactly what this supernatural horror thriller managed to do.
The film, titled The Reaping, was directed by Stephen Hopkins with the screenplay having been penned by Carey Hayes and Chad Hayes. The cast of the film includes Hilary Swank, David Morrissey, Idris Elba, AnnaSophia Robb, and Stephen Rea.
Stephen Hopkins previously directed films like Predator 2 and A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, so it was something of a return to the horror genre for him at the time. Sadly, the film didn’t seem to connect with audiences.
A brief premise for the film’s plot is as follows:
“Thousands of years ago there was a series of bizarre occurrences that many believed to have been the Ten Biblical Plagues. No one thought they could happen again. Until now.”
It’s certainly a movie with a unique premise. And while it didn’t do very well upon its initial release, it clearly seems to have gathered a following now on Max. It’ll be interesting to see what other titles might be able to do the same kind of comeback.
