Amazon Prime is one of many major streaming services available today. However, many users are making the decision to cancel their Amazon Prime subscriptions over a major change coming to the platform.
The video streaming service offers numerous titles that include The Boys, its many spin-offs, the animated series Invincible, and the Lord of the Rings prequel series The Rings of Power. Despite the platform’s popular shows, however, it’s not enough to keep subscribers paying.
As many social media users have shared online, Amazon Prime appears to have gone one step too far. Of course, it’s far from the only streaming service to make such a change in recent years.
The change that has so many subscribers in a frenzy is that Prime Video will soon introduce advertisements with their videos. This is set to go into effect this January. The territories that will undergo this new change include the United States and Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
Of course, as shared in the message to Prime members copied below, members will be able to avoid advertisements as long as they subscribe to the ad-free option that costs an extra $2.99 per month.
Dear Jeff, no.
Subscription TV should not include ads. I’ll cancel @AmazonUK Prime and you’ll also lose all that revenue from stuff I order because “free” delivery, that I can buy from multiple other retailers, often for less ££.

Here are some of the tweets from social media users that have expressed their decision to cancel Amazon Prime as a result:
Time to cancel Amazon prime lol why the fuck am I getting ads when I am paying $100+ a year for it

Anyone else notice that @amazon prime got rid of their free two-day delivery? Now it’s 5 days+. Wow. this on top of ads in @PrimeVideo. Going to make it real easy to cancel on next renewal.

I’ve had Amazon Prime for more years than I can count, but the $3 a month hike to not have ads played in videos was the last straw. The value offered was already a complete joke compared to what it was in the past, this just made it easy to finally hit that cancel button.

Is it just me or has #Amazon started to slack with their 2 day shipping? Packages are delayed or never arrive, and their streaming is adding #ads …So where are the benefits that I was paying for? Might be time to cancel #Prime

@amazon you added ads to @PrimeVideo to have me pay another 2.99 a month to get rid of them. Fuck that I’m just gonna cancel prime all together. Fuck you

@PrimeVideo so amazon prime is going to start to hold all of our movies and shows hostage with ads..unless we pay more..
Enjoy nothing…and cancel!!!!— logblack (@Logblack1977) January 6, 2024
Oh wow, Amazon sent me an email telling me that they’re putting ads in Amazon Prime, and that if I want to remove them it’ll cost me an extra £2.99 a month. It was the push I needed to finally cancel my membership.

Similar complaints were made when streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus also made the decision to introduce tiers both with ads and without. It seems to be a new trend for the streaming industry, and with so many competitors and massive changes underway, subscribers will have to see which services come out unscathed.
On that note, it certainly means that services will also have to endure the backlash for the time being. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Amazon Prime and other such streaming services as we have them.
