This film directed by Rob Reiner with a screenplay penned by Bruce A. Evans and Raynold Gideon is based on the Stephen King short story The Body. It’s an ominous name that makes reference to a literal dead body featured in the story. For the movie, however, it’s been renamed Stand By Me.
Though it’s a rather dark setup, the film does feature some moments of levity, as it follows a group of four boys who go on a hike to find the body which happens to belong to a missing boy. The four friends are played by Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O’Connell. Going back to the film’s darker themes, however, it is a coming-of-age story as they face the harsh realities of growing up.
Another notable member of the cast is Kiefer Sutherland, just prior to starring in The Lost Boys, who plays a bully named John “Ace” Merrill. He leads a gang that terrorizes the four boys, some of which happen to be younger brothers to the gang members.
Overall, it’s an impressive story, both in King’s writing and the way it was adapted for this feature film. Fans will no doubt be happy to revisit it, while newcomers will definitely see why it’s considered a true classic.
