The last decade has been loaded with sequels to classic films from the likes of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. As such, it may be surprising to know that 2004 was 20 years ago, and that a sequel to a classic movie from that year appears to be in the works.

This was revealed by film producer Gary Goetzman. As he spoke in a recent interview, he revealed that there are a number of projects he hopes to do that are sequels to past films. Unfortunately, some of these can be difficult to get off the ground.

Nevertheless, he revealed that a sequel to the aforementioned 2004 film is in the works. Here’s what he first shared with ComicBook.com about the difficulty of getting sequels made:

“I’d love to do a sequel of Where The Wild Things Are. There’s a lot of the things that we’ve done, if it established itself, branded itself, those movies, studios want another one. That’s the way it goes. I’m up for Mamma Mia 3, man. That would be a ball to do right about now. But it becomes, there’s so much involved with, ‘Who’s artistic property would that be? Would that be?’ It’s just not like, ‘Hey, let’s go do another free sailing! So, they all take time and that’s okay because we don’t mind things going slowly.”

One project that is getting off the ground, however, appears to be a sequel to The Polar Express. The 2004 animated film has become well-known for its rich Christmas-themed atmosphere and digital technology that was cutting-edge for the time.

“But that is trying to be worked out now, for sure,” Goetzman reveals, “Polar 2. Yes.”

The original animated film was directed by Robert Zemeckis from a screenplay written by William Boyles Jr.. The story itself was based on a children’s book written by Chris Van Allsburg in 1985 known by the same title. Of course, given that there was only ever one book, that the 2004 film adapted fully, it’s unknown what direction a new film could take.

Nevertheless, fans will no doubt be excited to know that a sequel to the classic 2004 movie seems to be in the works. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding The Polar Express 2 as we have them.
