Actor Tom Cruise recently signed a major non-exclusive deal with Warner Bros Discovery. Due to its non-exclusive nature, however, he’ll still be working with other studios like Paramount and Universal. Furthermore, Paramount has confirmed this by revealing that Top Gun 3 has entered development with Tom Cruise attached.
The original Top Gun film starring Cruise was released in 1986. It wouldn’t be until 2022, however, that a sequel would be released. Top Gun: Maverick brought back Cruise as the titular Maverick, and continued to make as much as $1.496 billion at the box office.
Naturally, then, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Paramount would want a sequel. As shared via Variety, “Paramount has tapped ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘ co-writer Ehren Kruger to work on a script for a sequel to the action blockbuster, according to to a knowledgeable insider.”
The publication continues:
“The studio is also hoping that ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘ director Joseph Kosinski will get back into the cockpit for another installment in the series, which would potentially see Cruise’s younger co-stars Miles Tiller and Glen Powell return for more high-altitude excitement.”
It appears that “discussions about the new script began late last year.” They add that “there’s still a few hurdles to cross, with Cruise and company needing to sign off on a final version.” Nevertheless, the time gap between Top Gun: Maverick and Top Gun 3 should be nowhere near what it took for the original film to get its first sequel.
In addition to working on this next Top Gun installment with Paramount, Cruise is also continuing to work with the studio on the next installment of the Mission: Impossible film franchise. So, despite his new deal with Warner Bros Discovery, it’s clear that Cruise still has lots of work to do with the other studios as well.
