The superhero genre has become widely associated with the likes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Films in recent years. Of course, prior to the MCU and DC, there were some very interesting takes on the classic superhero story floating around. One such underrated superhero movie is now trending on Netflix.
The aforementioned film was first released in 2008. Now, with nearly sixteen years having passed since it was released, the flick seems to have found new life on Netflix. Of course, it did have a rather successful run at the box office in ’08 – having still grossed $629.4 million worldwide.
Unfortunately, it never quite hit with critics, and there has never been any kind of sequel. At a time when superhero films often receive at least one continuation, it’s quite shocking to see. But its success on Netflix – suggests that the audience is still there.
This film is none other than Hancock. The 2008 superhero film was directed by Peter Berg from a screenplay written by Vince Gilligan and Vy Vincent Ngo. Additionally, the film was co-produced by actor Will Smith who also starred in the film’s title role. He acted alongside Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman for the film.
Hancock is an interesting superhero film because it’s also something of a satire of the genre. Many years before The Boys or Peacemaker had the opportunity to explore such a side of superheroes, Hancock delivered. It follows Will Smith’s titular character as he begins reshaping his public image at a time when he faces backlash for inadvertently causing destruction.
There have been occasional talks of a sequel over the years to Hancock. Of course, such a film has never come to fruition. Though it’s nice seeing that the original superhero film is still enough to keep Netflix subscribers watching.
