The 2002 movie 28 Days Later helped change the horror landscape and the way we view the modern-day zombie story. Now, more than two decades later, a brand-new sequel to 28 Days Later has been announced.
The plans for this sequel, however, are much bigger than one singular film. As noted via THR, “the hope is to launch a new trilogy.” It’s worth noting that the film was followed by a sequel in 2007 titled 28 Weeks Later.
The lesser-received entry only had the original film’s director and writer as executive producers. This time, however, they’ll be returning to reprise their roles for the next film.
Original 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle is tapped to direct the first installment of this potential trilogy. As for original writer Alex Garland, he could very well pen all three of the new films. The first entry is titled 28 Years Later.
It’s an appropriate title, given how much time has passed since the first film was released. Early talks suggested that a third film, if it ever happened, would merely be 28 Weeks Later. Though 28 Years Later does have a nice ring to it, and according to the publication, it could have a budget to match.
“The budget for each movie would be in the $75 million range,” THR shares.
In addition to their roles as director and writer, Boyle and Garland will also produce the new sequel. Original producer Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice will also produce 28 Years Later. The story details for the new film are being kept under wraps, but they do have a massive vision, comparing their goals to George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road:
“The precedent and touchstone execs are hoping for is 2015’s Fury Road, which served as George Miller’s return to the violent and action-packed world of Mad Max after a two decade absence. It was a return that was a critical and box office hit.”
Hopefully we’ll have more details regarding this 28 Days Later sequel in the near future. It’s certainly a long time coming. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any updates as we have them.
