Many adaptations have been released based on the works of author Stephen King. Films, television shows, and miniseries have all been crafted around his stories of horror, thrills, and heartfelt drama. However, one particularly intense Stephen King adaptation is now available to stream on Max.
The streaming service owned by Warner Bros Discovery has been a convenient place to watch a number of fan-favorite films and shows from all decades. There certainly seems to be a little something for everyone. As such, Stephen King fans will be pleased to know that the aforementioned Stephen King adaptation was added.
The movie released in 1983, was based on Stephen King‘s novel published just two years earlier in 1981. And while it wasn’t quite as popular as certain other adaptations from the same period – it has absolutely become a cult classic.
This very film is none other than Cujo. Lewis Teague directed the picture which had a screenplay penned by Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner, with Turner having used the pen name Lauren Currier.
Fans will recognize Cujo for its very iconic use of a St. Bernard dog gone rabid. It’s a tragic tale, seeing the once-friendly dog become something of a monster. The story only becomes more intense, however, once mother and son Donna and Tad Trenton are left alone in their vehicle with Cujo on the prowl.
The vicious dog circles the car and soon enough Tad becomes overheated and dehydrated. It’s a scary situation and one that makes Cujo such an intense watch. Genre fans will especially recognize Dee Wallace as Donna. Her other roles include appearances in The Hills Have Eyes, The Howling, and Critters in addition to having a role in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
It might not have the complexities as some of King’s other horror works, including the likes of IT and The Shining, nor is it as emotional as his prison drama The Shawshank Redemption. But there’s certainly plenty of primal terror at work in the heart of Cujo, and it’s that simplicity which makes it such a good movie.
Fans can check out the Stephen King adaptation Cujo on Max. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional titles worth a watch that are available to stream.
