Max is one of the most popular streaming services around. The platform, owned by Warner Bros Discovery, offers numerous films and television shows. Many of these are licensed while others are distributed especially for the app. Unfortunately, that means there are plenty of cancellations, and now a fan-favorite series has been canceled by Max after a mere two seasons.
It’s a competitive industry and streaming services have to make plenty of tough decisions when it comes to renewing shows. This particular decision is upsetting, however, because it received a number of positive reviews and critical acclaim following its release on the platform.
The show’s creator also shared a statement regarding the show’s cancellation. Though they didn’t list a reason for the cancellation, they did confirm there won’t be a third season and that Max was sad to see it go.
Here’s a partial quote of what David Jenkins, creator of Our Flag Means Death, had to share via Instagram:
“OUR FLAG won’t be returning for a third season. We’ve sailed at the pleasure of the fine people at Max, and it brought them no joy to see this journey come to a premature end. Casey Bloys, Sarah Aubrey, Suzanna Makkos, Billy Wee, and David Ruby have been incredible champions of this show. They allowed us to make something authentically weird and heartfelt, cheering us on the entire way.”
He confirmed just how disappointing the news is:
“I’m very sad I won’t set foot on the Revenge again with my friends, some of whom have become close to family. But I couldn’t be more grateful for being allowed to captain the damn thing in the first place.”

Our Flag Means Death was especially praised for its LGBTQ+ representation. The series included as many as three queer relationships. One of these featured the non-binary character Jim Jimenez played by Vico Ortiz.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Max and any other series cancellations as we have them. For now, fans can still watch the first two seasons of Our Flag Means Death on the streaming service.
