Recent years have given us numerous sequels that moviegoers never thought would happen. At one point it seemed unlikely that films such as Ghostbusters 3, Jurassic Park 4, or the upcoming Beetlejuice 2 would ever happen. Now another iconic movie is set to get a sequel – and it begins filming this year.
Unlike these blockbuster continuations, however, this particular sequel will be part “prequel and sequel.” Additionally, the film will continue the storylines of a hit crime thriller from 1995. Director Michael Mann will personally direct this continuation of his classic film.
Interestingly enough, the film will also be something of an adaptation. Mann’s continuation previously premiered as a novel in 2022 that he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner. Now we’ll get to see the same story hit the big screen following the success of his book.
As shared by Variety, he plans to shoot a sequel to his 1995 film Heat this year. As of this writing, he’s “putting the final touches on the script” which is set to contain elements set both before and after the events of the original.
Any other details regarding the project are currently being kept under wraps. Given the fate of Robert De Niro’s character, it doesn’t look like he’ll reprise his role for the sequel segments, and he’s too old to portray himself for the prequel portions of the film. Though Mann did previously hint that Adam Driver could play a younger version of his character.
Likewise, it’s unknown if Al Pacino or Val Kilmer could return to portray their respective characters for the sequel. They each previously appeared in the original 1995 hit. If Robert De Niro ends up being recast for prequel sequences, however, then it seems like we could see new actors portray Pacino’s and Kilmer’s characters as well.
Overall, with production set to begin this year, we’ll just have to see what happens. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the sequel to the movie Heat as we have them.
