The Marvel Cinematic Universe is taking full advantage of its Multiverse. A number of fan-favorite heroes and villains have made surprising appearances in recent years. We’ve seen Professor X appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprised their versions of Peter Parker for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Now Marvel has brought back a fan-favorite Avenger to the mix.
In addition to the Multiverse, Marvel has been introducing quite a few new characters as well. This has led to several classic Avengers characters being killed off or written away. Iron Man and Black Widow, for example, were both killed during the events of Avengers: Endgame.
Now, as shared in a new episode of the animated Disney Plus series What If…?, one such Avenger has just been reintroduced. It’s definitely a bittersweet moment for MCU fans and one that suggests that there could be other such future appearances.
The eighth episode of the show’s second season, titled “What If… the Avengers Assembled in 1602?” has Peggy Carter in a new universe attempting to help her fellow Avengers. This eventually leads fans to discover a version of Steve Rogers that includes his Infinity War appearance.

It’s a fan-favorite look for the character, and while it isn’t shown after the fact, it does give hope that there could be more bearded Rogers in the future. Especially with the way the Multiverse operates so far. In fact, Rogers is stuck in this universe after having grabbed the Time Stone.
He ultimately makes the decision to leave the universe, saving it as a result, and Peggy Carter is left wondering if they’ll ever have their happy ending. Fortunately, Rogers seems to think so, which itself is an allusion to their happy ending they have in Avengers: Endgame when he decides to stay back in time with Peggy.
Here are some Marvel fans’ responses to the return of this Avenger:
