Amazon Prime Video has become one of the most popular streaming services alongside the likes of Netflix and Disney Plus. And, much like its competitors, it looks like Prime Video will be introducing ads. Of course, you can opt for their ad-free tier – though it’ll cost you extra.
Subscribers to Amazon‘s Prime service have received a number of exciting exclusives over the years. One of the platform’s most successful shows has been The Boys and its various spin-offs. As shared by The Verge, however, you’ll have to experience ads when watching these shows without paying an additional fee.
Of course, many consumers aren’t happy with this change. But that isn’t stopping Prime Video – or any of the other streaming services – from introducing ads. In addition to those mentioned above, Max also now offers an ad-supported option at its lowest pay tier.
On that note, it’s worth noting the ad-supported option for most of these services is intended to be cheaper. Prime will instead make its current price plan the ad-supported tier. The platform currently costs $14.99 each month or $139 annually. Alternatively, consumers can subscribe to Prime Video individually for $8.99 per month.
As such, the ad-free tier will now cost an additional $2.99 per month. This means it will now cost $18 per month or $12 a month individually if you want to avoid ads. Here’s a snippet of what was shared in an official email released by Amazon:
“We are writing to you today about an upcoming change to your Prime Video experience. Starting January 29, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership. We will also offer a new ad-free option for an additional $2.99 per month* that you can sign up for here.”
The new change to Amazon Prime will occur on January 29, 2024. If you want to avoid ads while watching Prime Video, then you’ll have to subscribe to the new tier on that date.
