Fans were delighted to see Joaquin Phoenix take on the role of DC‘s iconic Batman villain Joker for an all-new interpretation. With decades of different sources to pull inspiration from, he and director Todd Phillips created a fantastically dark and intriguing new world. Now it’s set to expand with a new sequel, featuring Lady Gaga, and Phillips has released two new photos from Joker 2 to celebrate for Christmas.
“Wishing everyone a happy holiday and a beautiful new year,” Phillips writes in his caption for the images. Of course, this is far from our first glimpse at the upcoming sequel. Likewise, fans are quite familiar with Phoenix’s interpretation of the character. But there are some interesting new details that are shared here.
For starters, fans can receive yet another glimpse at Lady Gaga’s character. She’ll be portraying Harley Quinn, the Joker’s manipulated love interest who was first introduced in Batman: The Animated Series. She quickly became a fan-favorite and, after several iterations leading to Margot Robbie’s live-action take for the DCEU, Lady Gaga is now set to give it a go.
Of course, knowing the creative differences with the first Joker film and what we know from the source material, it’s likely this Harley Quinn will be quite different as well. If these images are any indication, however, we should have an interesting storyline revolving around these two maniacal characters and their tragic love story.

Todd Phillips directed the film following his work on Joker. He co-wrote the screenplay for the sequel alongside Scott Silver. The cast of the film includes Joaquin Phoenix as the titular Joker with Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Zazie Beetz will return as her character Sophie Dumond with Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener are also making appearances.
Joker: Folie à Deux, otherwise known as Joker 2, is slated to hit theaters on October 4, 2024. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates on this highly-anticipated sequel as we have them.
