Disney Plus immediately became a popular streaming app following its debut in 2019. One of the reasons for this was that the platform held an incredibly low price. Over the last few years, however, Disney Plus has been steadily increasing its price along with other major streaming services. Now Cancel Disney Plus is trending on social media following another announcement for price changes.
It might be quite a shock to remember that Disney’s streaming service first premiered at only $6.99 per month. In the years since, the service now has a tier with ads that costs $7.99 per month, and an ad-free tier at $13.99 per month. The ad-free price is quite new, having gone that high this past October after being only $10.99.
Furthermore, Disney Plus made other changes to their service. In a move similar to Netflix, they began to crackdown on password sharing. With so many alterations, Yahoo News pointed out that Cancel Disney Plus has started to trend on social media.
Here’s what the publication shared on the matter:
“Streaming platforms have become a key part of many studios’ content distribution plans, but not all of them have been quite as successful as Disney+ was out of the gate. With its nearly 100 years worth of popular offerings (which some would argue did damage to brands), combined with a very aggressive price tag, the platform was an immediate hit.”
The publication, however, adds that fans are now upset by the consistent price increases.
“However, that incredible subscription cost has been going steadily up over the last three and a half years. And with the news of the most recent Disney+ price increase and more, it looks like some fans have hit their limit, as an unflattering statement is currently trending.”
Here are some examples of tweets that have surfaced around the same time:
Disney seems to think that raising prices will stop people from leaving the service?
They really are even stupider than Anheuser-Busch.#CancelDisneyPlus pic.twitter.com/M6rrWkpM8s

Bye bye @Disney! It didn’t help you jacked the price today to $14.99. I support free speech and @elonmusk #CancelDisney #CancelDisneyPlus pic.twitter.com/RsNxQPOAIO

Shocking that they didn’t wait until after the anniversary date to encourage people to renew Disney + for $139.99 this year.
$55.20 (!!!) price hike for mid-quality, short season shows.
Just because you can afford it doesn’t mean you need to buy it. #CancelDisneyPlus pic.twitter.com/sLGi0Nhvrr

When you decrease your product’s quality while increasing the price, there’s only one thing for the consumer to do. #CancelDisneyPlus

It’s unknown what the long term future for streaming looks like. Especially as services continue to compete with one another and raise prices. Hopefully, however, there is a mutual ground reached between companies and consumers.
