Christmas is upon us in 2023. Surprisingly enough, however, it is not a holiday themed movie that has reached the top of Max this weekend. In fact, a very different kind of film is topping the streaming charts.
Many families are spending this weekend watching their favorite Christmas movies. One might assume that a similar holiday film would be at the top of Max, but even Barbie – which is an semi family-friendly film – is at number two.
It’s actually an international 2023 fantasy action movie that has dominated Max. It might be surprising, but it looks like subscribers are in the mood for something different this holiday season. The success highlights the growing influence of streaming services in the entertainment industry.
What’s perhaps even more remarkable is that this particular film was a box-office bomb. It actually only grossed $7 million on a $60 million budget. Nevertheless, against all odds, it’s somehow gotten a push on Max – and its streaming success is truly remarkable. With so many options available to viewers, it’s not easy for something to stand out and make its mark – especially at this time of year.
Knights of the Zodiac has been breaking odds at every turn. For those unfamiliar, it’s about an orphan named Seiya who discovers that he has hidden superpowers. Soon enough, he realizes he must protect a reincarnated goddess. Of course, in spite of the interesting plot, it’s still a surprise to see it in the number one spot on Max.
Tomek Baginski directed the film from a screenplay penned by Josh Campbell, Matt Stuecken, and Kiel Murray. The film is based on Saint Seiya by Masami Kurumada. The cast of the film includes Mackenyu, Famke Janssen, Madison Iseman, Diego Tinoco, Mark Dacascos, Nick Stahl, Sean Bean, Godfrey Gao, Caitlin M Hutson, Kaylan Teague, and Ryusei Iwata.
