During this time of year, certain movies have become a cherished tradition for families everywhere around the world. One classic movie has once again taken the top spot on the Disney Plus streaming charts as the holiday season approaches.
Despite the availability of new movies and shows on the platform, it should come as no surprise that the beloved Christmas movie has climbed to the top of the most watched movies.
Disney Plus offers plenty of movie and television titles that are perfect for just about any holiday. Of course, with the Christmas weekend upon us, subscribers are getting into the spirit by watching their favorite Christmas stories. There’s one classic film, however, that’s outright dominating the streaming service.
The movie was a massive hit when it was released in theaters in 1990 as well, as it grossed nearly $500 million worldwide against a production budget of $18 million. It even held the top spot at the United States box office for twelve straight weeks.
While there are numerous Christmas-themed movies and shows to choose from, it looks like subscribers are picking one title in particular. A certain classic film from 1990 with a young Macaulay Culkin is performing spectacularly well on the service.
If you haven’t already, you can probably guess what movie this is on Disney Plus. Hint: an eight-year-old kid is somehow forgotten by his parents on Christmas. If that wasn’t over-the-top enough, he has to protect his house from a pair of dim-witted thieves.
This film is none other than Home Alone, which also stars Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard, Catherine O’Hara, Roberts Blossom, and Devin Ratray. The film’s cast comes together quite beautifully. While Culkin obviously carries the film with his iconic performance, everyone brings it together, with Pesci and Stern knocking it out of the park with their performances as the Wet Bandits.
Additionally, it’s hard to forget about John Heard and Catherine O’Hara, who play a charming couple that manage to become so overworked by the holidays that they forget about their son on vacation. O’Hara gives a terrific performance in particular, becoming so worked up by her son’s absence that she manages to begin a cross-country journey to find him.
It’s a movie that manages to capture the right amount of holiday cheer, dark humor, and warm wholesomeness that can captivate a person of any age. As such, it’s no surprise that it’s doing so well on Disney Plus. In fact, it’s first sequel which also starred Macaulay Culkin has likewise performed positively on the service.
Numbers like these prove that Home Alone, no matter the year, will forever be a holiday classic.
