DC Comics has released a number of Batman comics over the years. Many of these different iterations have their own unique stories and messages to tell. Now DC has made the decision to release an alternate ending for a major Batman moment that’s considered by many to be one of the most iconic moments of the brand.
Fans will know that Batman #428 features the intense moment in which Jason Todd, AKA Robin, is killed. The decision to kill off the character was one chosen by readers. Fans of the comic were given the opportunity to vote on their preferred ending, and rather than saving Todd, they chose to have the character killed off altogether.
Of course, Jason Todd eventually did make his grand return. But it still kept fans wondering what could’ve been otherwise. Small glimpses at the alternate ending where Todd survived were occasionally released over the years. Only now, however, did DC decide to release an alternate version of the issue which contains both colored and lettered versions of the new ending.
Here’s the key page as shared via ComicBook.com:
It’s definitely interesting to have the opportunity to see what could have been released so many years ago. As mentioned, Jason Todd did eventually return to DC’s complex canon, so it’s not exactly like the character has been gone forever. But it certainly would have sparked a much different direction for the characters to head into.
Additionally, considering how the complete issue hasn’t been released until now, it makes one wonder if DC Comics might be willing to begin releasing other such projects from their vaults. If this issue sells well, it could mean other locked away stories could make a comeback. As always, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
