The latest – and perhaps final – installment of the DCEU is here. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has finally hit theaters. Unfortunately, however, Aquaman 2 happens to have the lowest score of its franchise on Rotten Tomatoes for a debut.
Of course, not everyone relies on such websites to determine what movies are worth seeing. But for a sequel where so many fans have low expectations, especially following the success of its predecessor, it’s not a good sign.
According to the Tomatometer, the film has debuted with an embarrassingly low rating. To emphasize the drop, other franchise installments for this year have received the following scores for their debuts: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (29%), The Flash (63%), and Blue Beetle (78%).
As of this writing, however, the sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom debuted with a 37% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s likely that this particular rating will continue to raise as more critics see the film. Additionally, it’s worth pointing out that the Audience Score for the movie is 77%. On the other hand, given the low expectations audiences have already had, it could be an unfortunate end to the DCEU.
The new sequel was directed by James Wan from a screenplay written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. He co-wrote the first Aquaman film alongside Will Beall and Wan.
In addition to Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Amber Heard as Mera, the cast of the film includes Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta.
Fans will be able to see Aquaman 2 in theaters on December 22, 2023. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding DC’s superhero franchises as we have them. For now, we’ll have to see how this film continues to perform.
