The X-Men movie franchise is gradually being reimagined by Marvel Studios. This began when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and thus the X-Men rights that the studio held. However, it looks like their upcoming X-Men reboot could be quite different, with rumors suggesting a major character could be left out.
The X-Men film franchise stood on its own for quite some time. Without the ability to incorporate other Marvel characters, the brand did quite well with its selection of X-Men heroes and villains. According to insider Daniel Richtman, however, Marvel is reportedly leaving out one of the franchise’s most popular villains for the new iteration.
This is definitely a tricky situation. After all, Marvel Studios no doubt wants to have a fresh take on the material, and many fans would love to see adaptations closer to the comics. On the other hand, Fox’s X-Men films were popular in their own right, and there are fans that don’t want to see the material completely disregarded.
While Marvel Studios has so far been respectful of Fox’s own takes on the characters, Richtman alleges that the villain Magneto will be left out of their upcoming X-Men reboot. The character has been a fan-favorite and Fox managed to introduce two versions of Magneto played by both Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender.
Their performances have become iconic for fans and many were hoping to see one or the other reintroduced in the MCU proper. After all, a more comic-accurate Magneto blended with their well-received performances seems like a dream come true. Unfortunately, it’s possible that Marvel Studios will go in a different direction for their X-Men reboot.
As always, however, the project is still in its early stages of development. This decision could change at any time, and it’s possible that the information isn’t accurate. So fans should take these reports with a grain of salt.
Additionally, we’ve already seen Patrick Stewart’s Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Mutliverse of Madness as well; so if he doesn’t appear in the X-Men reboot, we could still see Magneto pop up elsewhere. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the use of the X-Men in the MCU, and whether or not this fan-favorite character could make an appearance in the reboot.
