The upcoming DC superhero blockbuster Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is a sequel to 2018’s successful Aquaman adaptation. The film will also be the last entry in the DC Extended Universe, otherwise known as the DCEU. Now the post-credits scene for Aquaman 2 – potentially the last moment for the shared universe – has reportedly leaked online.
Many fans have suspected that the scene would include an appearance from Batman. Initially, it was rumored that Michael Keaton’s Batman would play a role in the film. His part was later scrapped as the result of reshoots and other changes behind-the-scenes, and actor Ben Affleck was rumored to have replaced him. Now, according to the alleged leak, neither will make an appearance.
It certainly would have made sense, at one time, for either Batman to be included. It would have set the stage for DC’s very own Crisis on Infinite Earths movie, something that The Flash even helped pave the way for. Of course, the DCU is set to replace the DCEU, and it’s expected these storylines are all being scrapped as a result.
As shared via CBM, then, the alleged post-credits scene for Aquaman 2 is actually much more lackluster. In fact, it doesn’t tease any kind of continuation. It merely includes Patrick Wilson’s character Orm eating a burger as a callback to an earlier gag in the film.
“He sees a cockroach nearby, picks it up and places it in his burger,” the publication reveals. “He then eats it and smiles.”
It’s definitely a disappointing ending for fans hoping that a sequel would be teased. Given the state of the DCEU, however, it looks like Warner Bros felt safer having a silly gag for a post-credits scene than hint at a sequel that would never happen.
Fans will be able to see Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in theaters on December 22, 2023. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Warner Bros and their DC franchises as we have them.
