Fans of The X-Files have been treated to a number of revivals over the years. Now it looks like the biggest X-Files revival yet is on the horizon from Disney.
It’s been shared via Bloomberg that Disney is developing a “new version” of the hit show. Although they weren’t able to reveal cast details, they did confirm that Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is attached to the project. He is said to be a producer.
However, given that it’s unknown who will be involved with the show’s cast, it’s unknown if David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson could return. The two stars have been associated with every other season of the series and its two feature films. Disney might want to take a fresh angle with the project and cast new actors to lead the show.
Of course, the brand has worked with new characters and cast members in the past. Though the main X-Files series revolved around Duchovny’s Fox Mulder and Anderson’s Dana Scully, there have been a number of spin-off projects.
The most notable spin-offs of The X-Files include the television series Millennium and a much shorter-lived series titled The Lone Gunmen. The various shows have crossed over with one another in the past and created a fully-functional shared universe. This has led to additional books, comics, and video games.
As such, fans would no doubt hope that the new series will take place within the same continuity rather than rewrite it. But, at a time with alternate continuities and complex Multiverses, it’s unknown what direction Disney might take with The X-Files.
Hopefully we’ll have more details soon. Of course, with Ryan Coogler attached, it will be an interesting project to keep an eye on. Especially considering his success with the two MCU features Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
