The 2009 horror film Orphan gave the world Isabelle Fuhrman‘s terrific performance as Esther. Though it seemed unlikely, the movie finally received a continuation in 2022, a prequel titled Orphan: First Kill. Now it looks like Orphan 3 is on the way.
Orphan: First Kill director William Brent Bell confirmed as much while speaking with THR. Of course, it’s unknown what the story for a third film could be, but he insists that essentially “anything is possible.”
Here’s what he shared regarding the development of Orphan 3:
“We’re developing a third one now. The franchise’s rulebook has been opened up to where anything is possible,” Bell said. “And knowing where we are in the process already, I’m extremely excited about the twists and turns that we have in store.”
Indeed, Orphan: First Kill was a surprisingly successful venture. After so long, it seemed unlikely that a continuation could live up to the 2009 film. But it’s indeed clear that anything is possible, especially now that First Kill has cemented Isabelle Fuhrman’s murderous character as a modern-day icon. While it’s unclear how the third film will turn out, if the second was any indication, then fans will be delighted to see where the story goes from here.
The original film, which also starred Vera Farmiga, established that Esther was actually a fully grown woman with the size and proportions of a child. She uses these traits to manipulate and stalk her victims. For the prequel, however, fans are aware of her condition from the beginning – which leads to some macabre fun and stunning twists led by Julia Stiles.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Orphan 3 and its development as we have them. Hopefully we’ll have more details soon in the near future as they construct the story. If nothing else, it looks like the third installment will take much less time to come together than the time between Orphan and First Kill.
