Stephen King, known for having crafted plenty of iconic stories in the horror genre, is also a champion for others’ horror tales. Now one such film from Guillermo del Toro, which Stephen King says terrified him, is available to stream via Netflix.
Guillermo del Toro is a filmmaker with numerous modern-day classics to his name. In addition to his memorable titles Cronos, The Devil’s Backbone, and Pan’s Labyrinth, he also directed Mimic, Hellboy, and the recent hit Pinocchio.
The picture currently streaming on Netflix, however, that had Stephen King “electrified” in 2015 was theatrically released that same year. The film is a gothic romance in addition to a supernatural tale with ghosts.
If you haven’t guessed already, the film is none other than Crimson Peak. Guillermo del Toro directed the film in addition to having written the screenplay with Matthew Robbins. Of course, the film’s cast also play a heavy role in carrying the story, with such big names as Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam, and Jim Beaver.
Here are the tweets that Stephen King initially shared in 2015 where he praised the film:
Was treated to a screening of Guillermo del Toro’s new movie, CRIMSON PEAK, this weekend. Gorgeous and just fucking terrifying.

CRIMSON PEAK electrified me in the same way Sam Rami’s EVIL DEAD electrified me when I saw it for the first time way back in the day.

The film earned $74 million worldwide on a $55 million budget. Although this isn’t the strongest box office performance for a Guillermo del Toro film, it did receive high critical reception from audiences and critics. As such, Stephen King isn’t the only one who had great things to say. It’s certainly great to see that the film has continued to extend its shelf life nearly a decade after its release.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Netflix and any titles they might have added to their catalog. For now, it’s a great chance for fans that might not have seen Crimson Peak to check it out on the service. Especially when considering Stephen King’s praise of the film. Otherwise, it might simply be worth revisiting.
