The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for providing its fair share of blockbusters. Many of their films have broken box office records. Now The Marvels has broken its own box office record – though in the other direction. It seems that The Marvels now has the honor of being the lowest-grossing movie in the MCU.
This was shared by Variety, where they noted that Disney will no longer report “the film’s weekend box office results any longer.” This was confirmed by the studio in an official statement where they shared the following:
“With ‘The Marvels‘ box office now winding down, we will stop weekend reporting of international/global grosses on this title.”
The publication does clarify, however, that the film isn’t leaving theaters. In fact, “the $220 million-plus budgeted tentpole is expected to play through New Year’s.” This is what the statement actually means:
“This memo signals that ‘The Marvels‘ is not expected to generate notable coinage during the rest of December. Over the weekend, the movie tumbled to 11th place on box office charts with just $2.4 million in its fourth outing.”
The film’s overall box office gross actually places it under 2008’s The Incredible Hulk without adjusting for inflation. As such, The Marvels has officially become the lowest-grossing MCU movie at the box office.
This seems to indicate that Marvel Studios will be adjusting its format for future releases. After all, not every superhero movie will continue to be a billion-dollar blockbuster, especially as audiences seem to be feeling superhero fatigue. One of the biggest issues with the film is its enormous budget. If Marvel can more realistically set their expectations, than the MCU will be able to continue expanding for quite some time.
