Work is currently underway on a sequel to 2022’s horror hit, The Black Phone. Scott Derrickson directed the film which was based on a short story by Joe Hill. Now it looks like the original cast is set to return for The Black Phone 2.
As shared by Deadline, this includes Ethan Hawke, who memorably played The Grabber in the film. Other cast members set to return for The Black Phone 2 include Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, and Emmy and BAFTA award winning actor Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora.
Scott Derrickson will also return to direct the sequel, which will be penned by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargirll. They’ll both produce along with Blumhouse’s Jason Blum. Joe Hill is onboard as an executive producer.
The publication reminds that the first film follows “a 13-year old boy, who is abducted by a child killer in a suburban neighborhood and locked in a soundproof basement, begins to receive calls on a disconnected phone from the killer’s previous victims.”
It’s currently unknown how this story will evolve for the sequel. But it will certainly be interesting to see how it includes the original cast – especially given the fate of Ethan Hawke’s character. But in a world that does include supernatural elements, just about anything is possible.
The Black Phone was a major hit, having earned $161.4 million at the box office on a budget estimated to be about $16 million to $18 million. As such, it might not be surprising to see that Universal would want a sequel. But one can also imagine that the writers have cooked up a very interesting story to make such a film work. As such, this will be an interesting production to follow in the coming months.
Fans will be able to see The Black Phone 2 when it hits theaters on June 27, 2025. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on the highly-anticipated horror sequel as we have them.
