Author Stephen King is widely recognized for his place in the horror genre. His stories have sold countless copies, inspired film and television adaptations, and motivated other writers to do the same. Now, however, Stephen King has been walking into another ballpark completely to defend The Marvels.
King recently made his stance on The Marvels clear. “I don’t go to MCU movies,” he reminded fans on X, “don’t care for them, but I find this barely masked gloating over the low box office for THE MARVELS very unpleasant. Why gloat over failure?”
Now, however, he’s given an answer to his own question. As you can see below, he created a follow-up tweet in which he suggests fanboys are to blame for the failure of The Marvels:
Some of the rejection of THE MARVELS may be adolescent fanboy hate. You know, “Yuck! GIRLS!”

It’s clear that King places his blame on The Marvels on “adolescent fanboy hate.” Interestingly, as shared with Yahoo, The Marvels co-star Iman Vellani is quite happy with Stephen King and his support of the film.
“Having Stephen King in anyone’s corner is pretty awesome,” Vellani shared to the outlet with a smile. Of course, not everyone is happy with King’s defense of the film. In fact, as you can see below, many social media users pointed out that King himself admits he doesn’t watch MCU movies. Others, including women, insisted that they simply did not enjoy the movie.
Here are some of those responses:
Since you don’t go to MCU movies and don’t care for them, that means you rejected The Marvels, right?
Does that mean you hate women? pic.twitter.com/6RI3UtcodV

I am a woman. I saw the movie.
It was bad.

Orrrrr it’s just bad?
Look at how well Barbie did…

I’m a woman. I didn’t see it, and I have no desire to, cause the MCU sucks now.

There are certainly plenty of variables associated with The Marvels and why it may not have done well at the box office or with fans. For example, some believe that the show’s reliance on Ms. Marvel to build context alienated any fans that didn’t have time to watch the Disney Plus series. To that end, it’s clear that Marvel Studios and Disney will be making some changes in making the MCU more accessible going forward.
The Marvels is currently playing in theaters. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any further updates as we have them.
