The live-action 2000 movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas has massively grown into a modern-day Christmas favorite. Jim Carrey starred in the movie as the titular Grinch character and now, according to a new report, he could be returning for a sequel.
The Dr. Seuss adaptation was initially met with mixed reviews, but it managed to become a box office hit, and even turned into one of the highest-grossing holiday films of all time. Now, as shared via GFR, a sequel to the film is imminent – with star Jim Carrey set to return.
“Jim Carrey is returning to Universal Pictures for The Grinch 2,” the publication shares, “once again playing Dr. Seuss’s most famous and ill-tempered creation.”
It’s worth noting that what story a sequel could take is unknown. Though there are some possibilities for a prequel to the film – and it would utilize a completely different holiday setting. For those Grinch fans out there, they may already know that there was a 1977 television special titled Halloween is Grinch Night.
The animated special followed the more iconic 1966 animation, albeit with a Halloween setting rather than Christmas. It took place prior to the events of its predecessor, when the Grinch was still evil, and it no doubt has plenty of potential for a big screen adaptation. After all, who wouldn’t want to see Jim Carrey not only back in the Grinch makeup, but in a Dr. Seuss-inspired Halloween setting?
Of course, all of this should be taken with a grain of salt. Universal Pictures has yet to announce an official sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas, nor has there been any official word on Jim Carrey joining such a project. But in a world where reboots are frequent and nostalgia is strong – anything is possible. Especially as Carrey himself has proven by doing more sequels in recent years.
